Rufus appears as a Farmer in Henry County Mississippi in 1850 with 20 Improved Acres of Land and $100 value in personal property. In 1860 he appears in Canton in Madison County, Mississippi and  is the owner of one 38 year old female and one 18 year old male slave and has a personal property value that has increased to $3900 with Real Estate worth $1700. Some of this value is likely a result of inheritance from his father and mother’s estate as the sale of his interest in the estate of mother Malinda Deal to his brother Thomas J Donald is recorded in Attala County on 01/31/1859. His interest was valued at $1200 at that time.

Rufus did serve in the civil war as a Confederate Soldier in the 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry and the 40th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry.  Details of the record of these units are included on the documentation link at the bottom of this page.

After the war Rufus appears on the 1880 Census in Little River, Arkansas listed as a Farmer at age 60. There is a marker that is possibly a memorial stone for Rufus in the Antioch Cemetery in Panola County, Texas. We do not know at this time if he died in Texas or perhaps passed away and was buried in Arkansas before John B Donald Sr came to Texas . We do know for certain that there is a marker for him in Antioch Cemetery in Panola County, Texas.
